UC (University of Coimbra) is the oldest university in Portugal and one of the oldest in the world, being a public institution of higher education. It began operating in Lisbon (1290) and later transferred to Coimbra (1537). It has been since 2013 a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Currently, the University of Coimbra has eight Faculties (Letters, Law, Medicine, Science and Technology, Pharmacy, Economics, Psychology and Education Sciences, Sports Sciences and Physical Education) and over 22 thousand students, 56.8% women and 43.2% men.
It comprises three university poles, eight faculties, four teaching and research units, nine cultural extension and training support units, sixteen libraries, two museums, two stadia, one botanical garden, one theatre, sixteen food units, and fourteen residences.
UC stands out in SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructures, in which it obtained the best classification (99.9 out of 100), being considered the fourth best university in the world in meeting this objective and the most sustainable in Portugal and 26th in the world, according to the fourth edition of the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2022.
In the area of citizenship, equality and inclusion, it benefits 5,016 students with scholarships and the Social Support Fund and provides health and safety at work services. Furthermore, it has a Plan for Equality, Equity and Diversity and in the field of research for the promotion of Gender Equality, the framework programme Horizon Europe, Gender-Equal Research or GendER@UC.
It belongs to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and offers bachelor, master and doctoral programmes according to the ECTS credit system, facilitating and promoting the academic mobility of students and teachers across Europe. The Faculty of Sports Sciences and Physical Education offers a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Sciences, Master’s Degrees in Exercise and Health, Sports Coaching, and Physical Education Teaching in Primary and Secondary Education, a Doctoral Degree in Sports Sciences and a Post-Doctoral Degree, as well as two research laboratories. In the context of higher education in the area of Physical Education and Sports, this is the only faculty in Portugal to develop the compulsory course unit named “Practical Studies II – Traditional Portuguese Games”, which has been taught for 20 years. Approximately 150 students per year receive training in this area, with a teaching load of 30 semester hours in a theoretical-practical model.
LUDUS, Laboratory of Games, Recreation, Traditional Fights and Capoeira, has already carried out, in partnership with other foreign laboratories, research in the field of games, considering the cultural, relational and affective dimensions of traditional games and sports (JDT), some of them projects subsidised by the European Union, others in partnership with INEFC – Lleida. She has produced books, book chapters, and scientific articles and has participated in national and international congresses.
His research lines are Identification and analysis of the game and recreational practices in the elderly:
The games of our grandparents; and Socio-anthropological studies of the game and sport.
Other activities promoted in the teaching of the subjects Traditional Portuguese Games, Recreation I and II and Organization of Leisure Activities are related to stimulating the practical application of the contents taught in these subjects, leading to participation in practical activities, in formal education classes and competitive and non-competitive recreational events, festivals, commemorative days, holiday camps among others, carried out in different institutions, there are public and private school groups and different levels of education, social solidarity institutions, institutions supporting the elderly and special populations.
